Wednesday of Holy Week

Carmelite Quote
Bl. Elizabeth of the Trinity

I believe that the people who are the really happy ones in this world are those who have enough contempt and forgetfulness of self to choose the cross as their portion!

What marvelous peace we have
when we find our joy in suffering!

(St. Peter in Chains)

'By means of my physical sufferings I am helping to complete what still remains of Christ's sufferings on behalf of his body, the church' (Colossians 1:24)

(Beheading of St. Paul)
This is what happiness is for St. Paul!

I keep thinking about this, and I must confess that I have a deep inner joy in thinking that God has chosen me to share in Christ's passion, and that this road to Calvary that I walk each day is becoming more and more the path to heaven!

Tuesday of Holy Week

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness.
In your compassion blot out my offense.
O wash me more and more from my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.

My offenses truly I know them;
my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone, have I sinned;
what is evil in your sight I have done.

That you may be justified
when you give sentence
and be without reproach when you judge,
O see, in guilt I was born,
a sinner was I conceived.

Indeed you love truth in the heart;
then in the secret of my heart
teach me wisdom.

O purify me, then I shall be clean;
O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me hear rejoicing and gladness
that the bones you have crushed may revive.
From my sins turn away your face
and blot out all my guilt.

A pure heart create for me, O God,
put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
nor deprive me of your holy spirit.

Give me again the joy of your help;
with a spirit of fervor sustain me,
that I may teach transgressors your ways
and sinners may return to you.

O rescue me, God, my helper,
and my tongue shall ring out your goodness.
O Lord, open my lips
and my mouth shall declare your praise.

For in sacrifice you take no delight,
burnt offering from me you would refuse;
my sacrifice, a contrite spirit,
a humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn.

In your goodness, show favor to zion;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice,
(burnt offerings wholly consumed),
then you will be offered young bulls on your altar.

Peace be with you!

Sunday in the Year for Priests

Hosanna!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the King of Israel!

In the ecclesial service of the ordained minister, it is Christ himself who is present to his Church as Head of his Body, Shepherd of his flock, high priest of the redemptive sacrifice, Teacher of Truth. This is what the Church means by saying that the priest, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, act in persona Christi Capitis (in the person of Christ).
Catechism 1548

This sacrifice of Christ is unique; it completes and surpasses all other sacrifices. First, it is a gift from God the Father himself, for the Father handed his Son over to sinners in order to reconcile us with himself. At the same time it is the offering of the son of God made man, who in freedom and love offered his life to his Father through the Holy Spirit in reparation for our disobedience.
Catechism #614

Jesus said to all: "Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in my steps."
Luke 9:23

Whitesville, Kentucky

Peace be with you!

Saturday of Our Lady

Patroness of Cuba

and Papal Recognition of her as
Patroness of Cuba

Prayer to Our Lady of Charity, Patroness of Cuba

Most Holy Mother of Charity
who came to us as a messenger of peace across the sea.
You are the Mother of all Cubans
To you we come, Most Holy Mother of God
to honor you with love as your children.

To your motherly heart
we entrust our desires and hopes
our work and our prayers.

We pray for our torn country
that we may be able to build
a nation based on peace and unity.

We pray for our families
that they may live in fidelity and love.

We pray for our children
that they may grow strong
in spirit and in body.

We pray for our young people
that their faith may increase,
as well as their attachment to
the truth.

We pray for the sick, the homeless,
the lonely, the exiled,
and for all suffering souls.

We pray for the Catholic Church in Cuba,
for its mission,
for its priests, deacons,
religious and laity.

We pray for the victory
of justice and love
in our country.

Mother of Charity!
We place ourselves
under your mantle of protection!

Blessed are you among women
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus!
And to Him be the glory and the power
now and forever. Amen.

Peace be with you!

Divine Mercy Moment

All the good that is in me is due to Holy Communion. Herein lies the whole secret of my sanctity. One thing alone sustains me and that is Holy Communion. From it I draw all my strength; in it is all my comfort...Jesus concealed in the Host is everything to me...I would not know how to give glory to God if I did not have the Eucharist in my heart.

THE SAINTLY TWINS
MARTYRS FOR THE FAITH

Prayer to SS. Cosmas & Damian

Oh glorious martyrs of Christ,
Saints Cosmas and Damian,
you gave your lives for the love of God,
benefiting your fellow man,
and crowning your martyrdom with an open and loyal profession of your faith.
You taught us to love God above all things,
and to love our fellow man as ourselves,
professing always,
and without fear,
the religion of Jesus.

Augmenting amongst the faithful populace many miracles,
you are glorious indeed.
Through your intercession,
which brings about deliverance of these miracles,
we pray to you for your aid in all things.
May your patronage never be far from us in the illness of our body and soul.
Oh great protectors,
Saints Cosmas & Damian,
assist us with your love and free us from all evils.
Amen.

Peace be with you!

Sunday in the "Year for Priests"

Lord Jesus, with St Jean-Marie Vianney, we entrust to your care:

all the priests we know,
all those we have met,
all those that have helped us,
all those you give us today as fathers.

You have called each of them by name. For each one, we praise you and we beseech you: keep them faithful to your Name. For you consecrated them so that, in your Name, they might be our pastors. Give them strength, confidence and joy in accomplishing their mission with their eyes fixed on your countenance. We know well that you choose for your work creatures that are weak, so that they have no cause for pride or vanity. Therefore we entrust them to you, so that they rely above all on you.

May the Eucharist that they celebrate nourish them and give them the courage to offer themselves with you on behalf of the lambs that we are. Plunge them into the heart of your Mercy, so that they always bear witness to your forgiveness.
(From a prayer book from the Sanctuary at Ars, France)

Saturday of Our Lady

O my Queen, you are the consolation that God Himself has given me. You are my guide in the pilgrimage of this world, strength to my weakness, riches to my poverty, balm to my wounds, relief to my sorrows; and it is you who breaks my chains.

Hear the humble prayers of your servant, allow yourself to be touched by my tears, Mary, my patience, my refuge and my hope, my safety and my support.

St. John of the Cross-Sayings of Light and Love

SAYING #124

Oh, how sweet your presence will be to me, you who are the supreme good! I must draw near you in silence and uncover your feet that you may be pleased to unite me to you in marriage, and I will not rest until I rejoice in your arms. Now I ask you , Lord, not to abandon me at any time in my recollection, for I am a squanderer of my soul.

Spiritual Life Dictionary

TODAY'S TERM: IMPERFECTIONS

Habitual imperfections when known, recognized, and voluntary, impede one from reaching the freedom of union.  Souls may have many also with regard to their spiritual practices and works.  Some are more to the surface; others more deeply rooted in the spirit and less perceptible. The dark night purges the soul of its habitual imperfections.
From the Collected Works of St. John of the Cross

From an Examinaiton of Conscience
by Fr. Robert Altier

Imperfections are not sins so they do not need to be confessed. It is not always easy to make the distinction between venial sins and imperfections. Some things are imperfections because they are very small, other things are imperfections because they are dispositions of the soul and not willful actions or failures, still others because they are habitual. It is good to be aware of  imperfections because as one grows in the spiritual life, the imperfections, voluntary and involuntary become areas where attention must be given in prayer. For this reason a few examples of imperfections are included here.

*Trying to control things rather than seek God's will
*Embarassment of being Catholic
*Failure to defend the Church when ridiculed
*Not trying to practice recollection or the frequent remembrance of God's presence
*Failing to spend extra time on Sunday in prayer and study of the Faith
*Not trying to cultivate peace in the family
*Taking one's spouse for granted
*Impatience
*Smoking or chewing tobacco (when it is a habit)
*Lack of punctuality
*Failure to pray for deceased parents and relatives
*Failure to pray for sinners

Let us pray for each other!

Peace be with you!
